Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | May 08, 2026:: The town of Deoband, historically associated with the influential Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband, witnessed an intense display of religious symbolism and political messaging as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed a massive public rally at Jaraud Jatt village in the Deoband region on Thursday.
The rally carried a distinctly electoral tone, with Hindutva emerging as the central theme alongside development and law-and-order issues. The Chief Minister opened his speech with chants glorifying Mother Shakumbhari Devi, Mother Bala Sundari, Bharat Mata, the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and “Jai Shri Ram.” The slogans were met with loud responses from the crowd, as the gathering repeatedly echoed chants of “Jai Shri Ram,” creating an atmosphere charged with religious enthusiasm and political mobilisation.
During his address, Yogi Adityanath launched a sharp attack on opposition parties while portraying the Bharatiya Janata Party government as a guardian of faith, security, and development.
The Chief Minister alleged that before 2017, religious events such as the Kanwar Yatra and Janmashtami celebrations frequently faced restrictions and administrative hurdles in Uttar Pradesh. According to him, the present BJP government has restored dignity, protection, and official respect to the state’s religious traditions and cultural identity.
Highlighting what he described as the government’s three core priorities—security, development, and religion—Yogi asserted that Western Uttar Pradesh was once notorious for riots, criminal intimidation, fear, and the migration of residents from violence-affected areas. He claimed that women and girls earlier lived under constant insecurity while criminal elements operated fearlessly.
Contrasting that era with the present situation, the Chief Minister declared that Uttar Pradesh has now transformed into an “Uttam Pradesh” under BJP rule—becoming “riot-free, fear-free, and development-oriented.” He further asserted that criminals no longer possess the audacity to threaten the safety and dignity of women in the state.
Apart from the ideological messaging, the rally also focused heavily on development initiatives undertaken by the state government. Yogi Adityanath cited expressway construction, expansion of power infrastructure, welfare schemes for economically weaker sections, and employment generation efforts as evidence of what he termed “inclusive governance.”
Invoking the BJP’s slogan of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas,” the Chief Minister maintained that government schemes are benefiting villages, farmers, youth, and women without discrimination.
The rally thus blended developmental claims with a broader Hindutva-oriented political narrative, a strategy that has increasingly defined the BJP’s electoral approach in Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking from Deoband, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the transformation of Western Uttar Pradesh as a journey “from fatwas to development,” asserting that Deoband is now emerging as a symbol of development, security, and trust. Addressing the public rally, he said the region, once associated with riots, controversies, and communal tension, has witnessed major changes under the BJP government. Referring to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) centre established in Deoband, Yogi stated that anti-national activities are now under strict surveillance and warned that anyone threatening the nation’s security would face severe consequences.
During the event, the Chief Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 325 development projects worth ₹2,131 crore, including roads, infrastructure, educational institutions, and welfare facilities. Contrasting the present with the period between 2013 and 2016, Yogi claimed Western Uttar Pradesh was previously marked by riots, fear, migration, and criminal dominance in districts such as Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Kairana. He asserted that after the formation of the “Double Engine” government in 2017, the region has undergone rapid development and improved law and order, with Saharanpur now being identified with expressways, industrial growth, and employment opportunities rather than communal unrest.
Criticising the earlier governments led by Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and the BSP, Yogi said, “The previous governments were engaged in misusing public money for constructing boundary walls around Muslim graveyards, whereas now those funds are being used for the development of the Shakumbhari Corridors, roads, and other infrastructure projects.”
With the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections gradually approaching, Yogi Adityanath used the Deoband platform to sharpen his attack on opposition parties. He accused them of practicing caste-based politics, dynastic control, and appeasement-driven governance.
According to the Chief Minister, opposition forces attempt to divide society along caste and regional lines during elections while misleading voters for political gain. He urged the public to remain vigilant against such politics.
The Chief Minister remarked that, at one time, fatwas issued from Deoband would send ripples of unrest across the entire country. People lived in constant apprehension, wondering what new controversy would erupt next. However, today, Deoband is emerging not as a symbol of fear and discord, but as a symbol of development and trust. Addressing the gathering, and taking aim at the opposition without explicitly naming anyone, the Chief Minister warned that society must remain vigilant against politics that seeks to divide people on the basis of caste and appeasement. He asserted that there is no alternative to development, and that the continuity of development is essential to sustain the progress of the state.
In one of the rally’s strongest political messages, Yogi declared that “fatwas, exodus, riots, extremism and opposition to Hindutva will not be tolerated,” signalling a continued aggressive ideological stance ahead of the electoral battle.
The choice of Deoband as the venue of CM Yogi’s meeting carried considerable symbolic weight. Following the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, Darul Uloom Deoband emerged as one of the most influential Islamic educational institutions in South Asia
Over the decades, however, critics from Hindu nationalist circles have increasingly accused the seminary and the region of contributing to communal polarisation and radical Islamist thought through the issuance of religious fatwas and hardline ideological influence. The region has also witnessed periodic communal tensions and allegations of Hindu migration from sensitive pockets.
Again, Deobandis are believed as more fundamental to focus on a strict, puritanical interpretation of Sunni Islam, opposing many Barelvi practices linking Sufi traditions as innovations or shirk.
Against this backdrop, Yogi Adityanath’s rally in Deoband was widely viewed by supporters as a deliberate political and ideological assertion from the BJP leadership. By raising Hindutva slogans from the soil of Deoband itself, the Chief Minister appeared intent on projecting a message of political dominance, religious confidence, and uncompromising governance ahead of the upcoming electoral contest in Uttar Pradesh.
