Hindutva Shift in Bengal: Suvendu to Be Sworn in as West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister on May 9.

Bengal’s Political Hindutva Icon Suvendu Adhikari Set to Become West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister.

Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata |  May 8, 2026:: In a historic political transformation for West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari — widely regarded as the strongest face of Hindutva politics in Bengal — has been unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party and will take oath as the state’s first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The decision was taken at the BJP legislature party meeting in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who announced that all proposals from newly elected BJP MLAs were received unanimously in favour of Adhikari.

The swearing-in ceremony will formally mark the end of the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule and the beginning of what BJP leaders describe as a “new ideological era” in Bengal politics.

BJP’s Historic Victory Reshapes Bengal Politics

The BJP’s emphatic victory in the Assembly elections has delivered one of the biggest political setbacks of Mamata Banerjee’s career. The Trinamool Congress, which dominated Bengal politics for over a decade and a half, reportedly saw its tally reduced to around 80 seats, indicating a dramatic shift in the state’s political mood.

Following the defeat, Mamata Banerjee alleged on May 5 that the verdict was the outcome of a “conspiracy” rather than a genuine public mandate. Shortly afterward, the West Bengal Governor dissolved the outgoing cabinet through a notification dated May 6, clearing the way for the formation of a new government.

Rise of Bengal’s Political Hindutva Face

Suvendu Adhikari’s elevation to the Chief Minister’s post represents the culmination of a remarkable political journey that transformed him from a regional power center into the principal face of Hindutva politics in West Bengal.

After joining the BJP, Adhikari aggressively championed issues relating to Hindu identity, illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, minority appeasement, and political violence against BJP workers. His sharp ideological positioning and grassroots mobilization earned him the image of Bengal BJP’s most assertive Hindutva leader.

Political analysts credit Adhikari with expanding the BJP’s Hindu consolidation strategy deep into Bengal’s social and electoral landscape. Through sustained campaigns across districts, temple outreach programs, and mass mobilization efforts, he succeeded in connecting the BJP’s ideological narrative with sections of Bengal’s traditional Hindu electorate.

Adhikari also emerged as a key bridge between the BJP and influential Hindu religious figures in Bengal. He frequently shared platforms with monks and saints, particularly under the guidance of Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, strengthening the party’s outreach among religious and nationalist groups in the state.

The Leader Who Defeated Mamata Banerjee Twice

Suvendu Adhikari remains the only political leader to have directly defeated Mamata Banerjee in two high-profile electoral battles — first in Nandigram in 2021 and again in Bhabanipur in 2026.

His Bhabanipur victory is being viewed as politically symbolic because the constituency was considered a stronghold of Banerjee and carries major ideological significance for the BJP due to its association with Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

Adhikari defeated Banerjee by a margin exceeding 15,000 votes and later described the outcome as a “Hindutva mandate.” He asserted that Hindu voters across caste and regional identities had united behind the BJP.

According to Adhikari, while Muslim voters largely backed the TMC, communities including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists supported his candidature in large numbers. He also claimed support from Gujaratis, Marwaris, Purvanchalis, and even sections of Left supporters who shifted towards the BJP to defeat the ruling party.

Dedicating his victory to BJP workers and “martyrs” who contributed to the saffron party’s rise in Bengal, Adhikari linked the election result to a larger ideological struggle aimed at reshaping the state’s political identity.

Preparations Begin for New Government

Preparations for the transition of power are already underway across Kolkata. Senior officials confirmed that extensive arrangements are being made inside the West Bengal Assembly for a possible cabinet meeting immediately after the oath-taking ceremony.

The historic Writers’ Buildings, once the nerve center of Bengal’s administration before the secretariat shifted to Nabanna in 2013, is also undergoing renovation and maintenance. The building is expected to once again house the Chief Minister’s Office and several key government departments under the new administration.

Adhikari Meets Governor to Stake Claim

Ahead of government formation, Suvendu Adhikari met West Bengal Governor R. N. Ravi at Lok Bhawan in Kolkata, accompanied by senior BJP leaders and some newly elected MLAs, to formally stake claim to form the next government.

Saturday’s swearing-in ceremony is expected to witness the presence of senior BJP leadership, religious figures, and party workers from across the state. For the BJP, the event symbolizes not merely an electoral victory, but the arrival of a new ideological force in Bengal politics led by Suvendu Adhikari — the party’s most prominent Hindutva face in the state.
