Hridya Bharti | HENB | Mumbai | May 27, 2026:: Tensions escalated sharply in Mumbai’s suburban Mira Road ahead of Eid ul-Adha (Bakrid) after a dispute over the keeping of sacrificial goats inside a residential housing complex triggered protests by Hindutva organisations, political reactions, police intervention, and allegations of communal provocation.
The controversy centred around the Poonam Cluster Society in Mira Road, located in Maharashtra’s Thane district, where members of the Muslim community had reportedly constructed a temporary shed to keep goats intended for Bakrid sacrifice. The move drew objections from several Hindu residents, who, with the support of activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, alleged that the presence of the animals inside the residential premises created inconvenience and violated civic norms.
According to protesters, the goats caused hygiene concerns and discomfort to residents. VHP coordinator Harsh Singh claimed that senior citizens in the society faced breathing difficulties due to the temporary goat enclosure. He also alleged that he was assaulted during the confrontation and stated that an FIR had been registered on the basis of his complaint.
The dispute intensified late Monday night when a scuffle reportedly broke out between two groups over the presence of the goats and the construction of the shed. Police sources said the confrontation turned violent around 12:50 am on May 26 after a man allegedly approached the protesting Hindutva activists asking for local VHP leader Nagnath Kamble. When questioned about his identity, the man allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked the protesters, injuring at least three VHP members during the altercation.
An FIR was subsequently lodged based on Harsh Singh’s complaint, and the accused was later detained and handed over to authorities. The incident heightened tensions in the locality and prompted a stronger mobilisation by Hindutva organisations.
Following complaints from Hindu residents and saffron activists, the local municipal corporation demolished the temporary shed constructed for the goats on Tuesday afternoon. However, tensions flared again after members of the Muslim community allegedly began rebuilding the structure.
As the situation escalated, VHP and Bajrang Dal workers gathered outside the housing society and recited the Hanuman Chalisa as part of their protest. The agitation took a controversial turn when some protesters allegedly attempted to bring a pig into the society premises, claiming they intended to conduct a “Varaha Puja” in response to the keeping of goats for sacrifice.
Police intercepted the protesters before the pig could be brought inside the society complex. The claim of “Varaha Puja” drew attention because the ritual is traditionally associated with Varaha Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu’s Varaha incarnation, which falls later in the year.
Senior police officials, including the Divisional Commissioner of Police, rushed to the spot to prevent further escalation and mediate between the two communities. Security deployment in the area was increased amid fears of communal unrest.
The controversy soon triggered strong political reactions across party lines.
Sanjay Upadhyay defended the campaign against sacrificial goats being kept in residential societies and issued a provocative warning during media interactions. Referring to a similar dispute in Borivali’s Sumer Heights housing complex, he said that if Muslims continued to keep goats for sacrifice inside societies, protesters would “answer goats with pigs.”
He further alleged that some members of the minority community were disregarding constitutional norms and instead following “Sharia,” remarks that added to the political and communal sensitivity of the issue.
On the other hand, Pratap Sarnaik appealed for restraint and urged residents to respect the sentiments of all communities living in shared housing complexes. He blamed “outsiders” for allegedly attempting to instigate unrest in the area.
Abu Azmi also weighed in on the matter, stating that illegal qurbani (animal sacrifice) should not be permitted under any circumstances. However, he urged authorities to ensure that legally permitted sacrifices are conducted in enclosed spaces and according to official guidelines. Azmi additionally argued that inflammatory public statements against the Muslim community should invite action from the administration.
The row has also intensified the broader debate in Maharashtra over Bakrid-related animal sacrifice practices in urban residential areas.
In adjoining Mumbai, Ritu Tawde and several leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to issue a blanket ban on goat sacrifice in housing societies and chawls during Bakrid. BJP leaders argued that despite existing civic regulations, goats continue to be brought into densely populated residential areas, leading to disputes and law-and-order concerns.
BMC officials, however, maintained that guidelines governing animal sacrifice and slaughter activities are already in force and are being monitored.
Meanwhile, the Government of Maharashtra has directed police authorities to invoke stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against cattle smugglers and illegal slaughterhouses ahead of Bakrid. The move has drawn criticism from sections of the Muslim community, who allege that the crackdown is disproportionately targeting Muslims under the guise of enforcing law and order.
The Mira Road episode has once again highlighted the growing communal tensions surrounding religious practices, housing society regulations, and animal sacrifice during Bakrid in Maharashtra’s urban centres, with authorities now facing the challenge of balancing religious freedoms, civic concerns, and communal harmony ahead of the festival.
