Amid Vijayapura Protest Threat, Call Rises for Lingayat–Veerashaiva Reconciliation.

Set Aside Differences, Strengthen Unity: Leaders Appeal to Kannadiga Hindus Amid Seer Row.

B Upendran | HENB | Belagavi (K’taka) | June 15, 2026:: Members of several Lingayat associations have opposed the proposed visit of Kaneri Mutt seer Sri Adrushya Kadsiddheshwar Swamiji to Vijayapura, alleging that he has made derogatory remarks against fellow Lingayat seers and followers of the Basava tradition. The organisations contend that his statements have hurt the sentiments of the Lingayat community and disrupted communal harmony.

The associations have warned of protests if the seer is allowed to address a Hindutva convention scheduled to be held in the district in July. Protest leaders have urged the district administration to closely monitor the situation and take steps to prevent any law-and-order issues arising from the event.

The controversy surrounding the Kaneri Mutt seer stems from speeches in which he allegedly criticised prominent Lingayat pontiffs and organisations associated with the Basava cultural movement. His remarks triggered widespread protests across several parts of Karnataka, with Lingayat groups accusing him of using inflammatory and disrespectful language against revered religious leaders.

The issue has previously led to administrative action in Karnataka. In 2025, the Vijayapura district administration imposed a temporary ban on the seer’s entry into the district, citing concerns over public order following protests against his statements. Similar restrictions were later reported in neighbouring districts amid fears of escalating tensions.

Supporters of the seer, however, have argued that the restrictions and opposition to his programmes amount to an infringement on religious freedom. Several Hindu organisations and political leaders have backed his right to participate in religious and cultural events, leading to a broader debate over freedom of expression, religious sensitivities, and public order.

With the proposed Vijayapura convention approaching, authorities are expected to assess the security situation and engage with stakeholders to ensure that any gathering remains peaceful. The developments are being closely watched by religious organisations and political observers, given the influence of Lingayat institutions in Karnataka’s social and public life.

Call for Unity

Amid ongoing differences and debates within the Lingayat and Veerashaiva communities, several social and religious leaders have called for unity, harmony, and mutual respect among all sections of Hindu society in Karnataka.

They have urged members of both communities to focus on their shared spiritual heritage, cultural traditions, and contributions to Kannada society rather than allowing disagreements to create divisions. Leaders emphasised that Lingayats and Veerashaivas have played a significant role in shaping Karnataka’s social, religious, and cultural landscape and should work together to preserve this legacy.

The appeal stresses that dialogue, understanding, and respect for differing viewpoints are essential for maintaining social cohesion. It also calls upon religious institutions, community organisations, and youth groups to promote brotherhood and discourage rhetoric that could deepen tensions.

“Differences of opinion should not become causes of hostility. The strength of Karnataka lies in its unity. All Kannadiga Hindus, irrespective of sect or denomination, must stand together for social harmony, cultural preservation, and the welfare of future generations,” the appeal states.

The leaders further urged devotees and community members to reject divisive narratives and instead foster cooperation, ensuring that Karnataka’s diverse Hindu traditions continue to thrive in an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect, and collective progress.
