Bhagwan Ram Idol Construction Stopped in B’desh Amid Islamist Threats and Anti-Hindu Campaign.

Bangladesh: Construction of Bhagwan Ram Idol Halted Amid Islamist Threats; Fresh Concerns Over Religious Freedom and Hindu Safety.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | June 14, 2026:: The construction of a giant idol of Bhagwan Ram in Bangladesh’s Gaibandha district has reportedly been halted following threats and opposition from Islamist groups, triggering renewed concerns over the safety, religious freedom, and rights of the country’s Hindu minority community.

The incident took place in Palashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district in the Rangpur Division, where a temple complex had undertaken the construction of a large Bhagwan Ram idol as part of a broader religious project. According to local reports and statements attributed to members of the temple committee, mounting pressure, intimidation, and threats of violence from Islamist elements ultimately forced organizers to suspend the construction work.

A member of the temple committee reportedly announced that the project would be paused “in the interest of the nation, society and communal harmony.” The committee stated that construction had been suspended to avoid tensions and that any future decision regarding the project would involve consultation with stakeholders and the wider community.

Threats and Online Campaigns Against the Project

The controversy surrounding the idol project reportedly intensified on Bangladeshi social media platforms, where numerous users allegedly posted hostile remarks and threats against the construction.

Several posts circulating online reportedly called for the demolition of the idol and temple complex, while others allegedly urged authorities or members of the public to stop the project. Some comments contained inflammatory rhetoric directed at Hindus and supporters of the temple initiative.

According to reports, the online campaign included calls for vandalism and threats against the under-construction idol. Critics of the development argue that such statements contributed to an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among local Hindus.

Observers note that the episode reflects broader concerns regarding the rise of religious polarization and anti-Hindu sentiment in certain sections of Bangladeshi society.

Historical Context and Concerns

The Palashbari region has witnessed incidents of attacks on Hindu temples and vandalism of religious idols in previous years. Human rights activists and minority rights advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples, homes, businesses, and religious festivals.

Various domestic and international organizations have documented incidents in which Hindu communities have faced violence following allegations of blasphemy, political unrest, or communal tensions.

The suspension of the Bhagwan Ram idol project has therefore been viewed by many as part of a wider pattern of challenges faced by religious minorities in the country.

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury Raises Alarm

Prominent Bangladeshi journalist and editor of the newspaper Blitz, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, expressed serious concern over the reported halt in construction.

In posts on X, Choudhury alleged that Islamist extremists had successfully pressured authorities and organizers into stopping the project. He further claimed that extremist groups were planning attacks on the site and that social media platforms were being used to spread calls for vandalism against the idols.

Choudhury appealed to Hindus and human rights advocates around the world to raise awareness about the issue and urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety of the temple complex and the religious structures under construction.

He also questioned what he described as a double standard regarding religious infrastructure, arguing that while mosques, churches, and pagodas are constructed in various countries without controversy, Hindu religious projects often face opposition from extremist groups.

Taslima Nasrin Condemns Threats

Exiled Bangladeshi author and activist Taslima Nasrin also strongly criticized the hostility surrounding the construction of the Lord Ram idol.

Nasrin reportedly questioned why the construction of a Hindu religious monument should generate opposition in a country where thousands of mosques exist and new mosques continue to be built. She argued that religious freedom should apply equally to all communities and maintained that no individual or group has the right to destroy or threaten another community’s place of worship simply because of ideological disagreement.

Her remarks were welcomed by advocates of minority rights, who view the controversy as a test of Bangladesh’s commitment to religious pluralism and constitutional protections.

Appeal by Indian Lawyer

Veteran Indian lawyer Amita Sachdeva reportedly wrote to Bangladesh’s diplomatic mission in New Delhi, urging authorities to ensure protection for the idols and the temple complex in Gaibandha.

The appeal reflects growing concern among sections of Indian civil society regarding the safety of Hindu religious institutions and communities in Bangladesh.

Awaiting Official Responses

At the time of reporting, no comprehensive official response regarding the controversy had emerged from either the Government of Bangladesh or the Government of India.

The issue has nevertheless sparked debate among political commentators, human rights activists, and minority rights organizations regarding the protection of religious freedoms, the role of extremist groups, and the challenges faced by minority communities in South Asia.

Questions Raised Over India’s Response

The controversy has also reignited debate regarding the response of the Government of India (GOI) to the concerns of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community. Several Hindu rights activists, commentators, and civil society voices have expressed disappointment over what they describe as a muted or cautious response from New Delhi to repeated reports of attacks on Hindus, temple vandalism, religious intimidation, and threats by Islamist groups in Bangladesh.

Critics argue that despite numerous incidents involving Hindu places of worship and minority communities in recent years, the Government of India has often refrained from making strong public interventions, preferring diplomatic engagement through official channels. They contend that the suspension of the Lord Ram idol project represents yet another instance where concerns regarding the religious freedom and security of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority have not elicited a visible response from Indian authorities.

As of the latest reports, neither the Indian Ministry of External Affairs nor senior leaders of the ruling government had issued a detailed public statement specifically addressing the halt in construction of the Lord Ram idol at Palashbari.

Islamist Demonstration in Dhaka Sparks Further Concern

Adding to the controversy, Islamist groups reportedly organized demonstrations in Dhaka following Friday prayers, demanding a halt to the construction of Lord Ram idols and Hindu religious projects in Bangladesh. According to reports circulating on social media and among rights activists, participants in the rally raised slogans opposing the Ram idol project in Gaibandha and called for its cancellation.

Videos and photographs shared online allegedly showed some protesters publicly humiliating an image of Lord Ram by striking it with sandals, an act widely condemned by members of the Hindu community as deeply offensive and provocative. Critics argued that such demonstrations not only targeted a revered Hindu deity but also contributed to an atmosphere of hostility toward the country’s religious minorities.

The reported incident has intensified concerns among minority rights advocates, who warn that inflammatory public campaigns and religiously charged rhetoric risk further undermining communal harmony and emboldening extremist elements opposed to religious pluralism in Bangladesh.

Broader Implications

The reported suspension of the Lord Ram idol project has become a symbol of wider concerns about communal relations and minority rights in Bangladesh. Supporters of the project argue that Hindus should enjoy the same freedom to construct temples and religious monuments as other faith communities. Critics of the threats surrounding the project warn that allowing intimidation to dictate religious expression could undermine principles of equality and religious liberty.

As tensions continue, rights advocates are calling upon authorities to uphold the rule of law, protect all places of worship, and ensure that religious minorities can practice their faith without fear of intimidation, violence, or discrimination.
