Huge Foreign Funding from Christian Organisations, Missionary Activism and the Cost of Delayed Infrastructure Projects in India.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | Aug 8, 2026:: Foreign donations can become a significant source of funding for organisations operating in India, but concerns have also been raised over the role of foreign-funded activism in delaying or obstructing major infrastructure and industrial projects.

The attached data graphic from a X handle cites five major projects—the Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Dam, Sterlite Copper Plant in Thoothukudi, Mumbai Metro Line 3, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, and Konkan Railway—and attributes substantial financial, operational and opportunity costs to delays arising from protests, litigation, regulatory proceedings and environmental objections.

According to the graphic, the Sardar Sarovar project faced prolonged delays and major cost escalation, while the Sterlite Copper plant experienced closure-related economic losses. Mumbai Metro Line 3, Kudankulam Nuclear Power and Konkan Railway are likewise cited as examples where delays or project-related disputes allegedly resulted in additional costs, lost productivity, logistical burdens and other economic consequences.

In the handle of Eminent Intellectual it is claimed that, “Foreign donation is our most expensive import. Christian missionaries have blocked or delayed hundreds of projects in India. If we just take 5 such cases from memory, the financial loss + opportunity loss to India is 5 lakh crore. Yes 5 lakh crore on just 5 projects. Think about the damage on 100s.”

The graphic estimates that the cumulative financial and opportunity losses associated with these five cases run into several lakh crore rupees. These figures, however, should be independently verified against official government records, court documents, project reports and audited economic assessments before being presented as established facts.

Against this backdrop, the X account Eminent Intellectual (@total_woke_) has argued that foreign funding should be examined in the context of what it describes as the activities of Christian missionary-linked and other activist networks that, in its view, work against India’s strategic and economic interests. The account’s framing goes further, characterising such alleged networks as “anti-national forces.” That is an allegation or opinion expressed by the social media account, not an independently established fact, although alleged Christian conspiracies in India have been reported in several cases in contemporary times.

The broader argument is that India needs a transparent and effective regulatory framework to ensure that foreign-funded organisations operating in the country comply fully with Indian law and disclose their sources and utilisation of funds.

This is where the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) becomes relevant. The law is intended to regulate the acceptance and utilisation of foreign contributions by individuals, associations and organisations and to ensure that such funds are not used in ways contrary to India’s national interest or applicable law.

The issue, therefore, is not simply whether foreign donations should be permitted or restricted. It is whether foreign funding, activism, litigation and project opposition are subject to adequate transparency, accountability and regulatory oversight—particularly when disputes surrounding strategically important infrastructure projects may have wider economic and social consequences.

If even a fraction of the losses attributed to delayed projects is substantiated, the economic implications could be considerable. The larger question for policymakers is how India can balance legitimate environmental, social and civil-society concerns with the need to protect critical infrastructure, investment and national economic interests.
