Upendra Bharti | HENB | Mainpuri | Aug 12, 2026:: A group of Hindutva activists allegedly threatened and forced Muslim shopkeepers including hotels and dhaba (road side roadside eateries) selling eggs, chicken, other meat food items, and raw meat to shut their businesses in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri, raising concerns over the targeting of Muslim-owned businesses and the growing assertion of pro-active Hindutva groups in the BJP-ruled state.
According to various media reports, a video circulating on social media shows several Hindutva activists carrying sticks and confronting and threatening Muslim shopkeepers and vendors. The men reportedly ordered businesses selling eggs, chicken, and other food items to close and were seen arguing with and verbally abusing some shopkeepers.
Social media posts identified the group as members of the Vishva Hindu Mahasangh Gau Raksha and claimed that the action was carried out in the name of cow protection. One of the men seen in the videos has reportedly been identified in the posts as Golu Chauhan, described as the district president of the Vishva Hindu Mahasangh.
Reportedly, local Hindutva activists appealed to shopkeepers not to sell eggs, chicken, other meat products, or raw meat publicly during Sawan. Sawan is considered a highly sacred month in the Hindu religious tradition and is dedicated to Bhagawan Mahadev. However, according to the reports, some shopkeepers did not comply with the appeal, leading to a confrontation.
The Hindutva activists invoked the ongoing month of Sawan while pressuring shopkeepers to shut establishments selling eggs, chicken, other meat products, and raw meat publicly. The videos have since triggered criticism over the alleged targeting of Muslim-owned businesses and the actions of private groups attempting to enforce restrictions on what shops can sell.
At the same time, the Hindutva activists reportedly maintained their position, citing religious sentiments and the observances associated with Sawan. The incident has consequently sparked a wider debate over religious sensitivities, the rights of businesses to operate, and the role of private vigilante groups in enforcing social or religious restrictions.
