Hamid Ansari’s Remarks Quoting Nehru on Hindu Right-Wing Communalism Trigger Political Debate.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Sept 21, 2026:: Former Vice President Hamid Ansari’s remarks at the A.G. Noorani Memorial Lecture have triggered a political row. Ansari, while citing a historical observation attributed to Jawaharlal Nehru, spoke about concerns over “Hindu right-wing communalism” and a shift from civic to cultural nationalism. The BJP and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have criticised the remarks, while the Congress has defended Ansari. Some Muslim clerics have also publicly distanced themselves from the comments.

The statement, attributed to Nehru that “Hindu right-wing communalism is more dangerous than Communism”, was merely a conjecture arising from what critics describe as an absurd concoction derived from his own analysis of Hindutva politics and Communism. During his political career, Nehru regarded the Communists as his natural allies while distancing himself from personalities such as Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who were associated with Hindutva politics.

India’s first Prime Minister, Nehru, wanted to “Islamise” the Indian education system by appointing Abul Kalam Azad as his Education Minister. Azad was born in Mecca and, according to this argument, had no formal academic qualifications apart from madrasa education. Nehru’s political choices regarding Islam and Communism, therefore, cannot necessarily be regarded as an objective basis for either appreciating or rejecting right-wing political thought.

The derogatory line reportedly adopted by former Vice President Hamid Ansari can, according to his critics, be viewed as a reflection as an anti-Hindu position—one that they allege remained suppressed during his tenure in office but later surfaced through his remarks, including his reference to Nehru.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also described Ansari’s remarks as anti-India.
