KOLKATA, 17 JAN: In addition to cross-border terrorism, the Centre apprehends attack by Left-wing extremist groups ahead of Republic Day celebrations. The Centre has urged the state governments to intensify vigil along the Indo-Nepal border.
An Intelligence Branch official said Maoists may carry out large-scale attacks during this period following the killing of top Maoist leaders, including Ajad and Kishenji. The Maoists have even prepared a hit-list of top politicians to avenge the killing Kishenji, said the official.
In a message (No. 18/VS/2011 (9)-335), the Centre has urged all the Maoist-dominated states to be on full alert “keeping in view the increased activities of the Left-wing extremists and their involvement in violent incidents, particularly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Maharastra, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh”. The letter states that functions to mark the Republic Day will be held throughout the country, particularly in Delhi and there is high possibility of Left-wing extremism, in addition to cross-border terrorism. The functions that are on special alert by the Central Intelligent agencies are “Republic Day Parade, Beating the Retreat Ceremony, the President’s Reception, etc, which would commence on 24 January and continue till 29 January”. The celebration is an opportunity the Left-wing extremists could try to exploit, apprehends the agencies. The letter states: “Indo-Nepal border is being used for infiltration/ex-filtration by activists of the CPM (Maoist). Necessary alertness will be required on this border.” The letter also maintained, “Alert is also required in West Bengal to detect possible infiltration and movement of Muslim militants who may sneak into the state from Bangladesh and to identify other hostile elements and suspects moving towards Delhi.”
The letter has urged senior police officials of the states to depute teams of fully-briefed and trained police personnel in civil dress at railway stations, bus terminals and airports. The Centre has asked all state Intelligent units to convey information relating to Republic Day celebration to the special commissioner of police (security) and special commissioner of Police (Intelligence) in Delhi “immediately”.
