Anti Hindu Muslim cleric held by Gujarat Police for his controversial anti-garba remark demeaning Navratri and Hindu festivals.
D Desai & N Dave | Ahmadabad | September 24, 2014:: After severe demands for his arrest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal, the Gujarat Police on Tuesday picked up Imam Mehdi Hasan for his controversial statement on the Navratri festival and whisked him away to some undisclosed place for interrogation.
The Imam of Thasra in Anand district in central Gujarat had called Navratri, the nine nights of Garba, as the “festival of demons”. He had also demanded a ban alleging that “commercialization of Garba” had completely taken out the religious fervour from it.
Youngsters participating in the festival danced to Bollywood tunes and many went to the events in an inebriated state, the Imam had claimed. He had refused to apologize for his comment stating that he would better prefer to get arrested.
The Imam had made this statement after the VHP and the Bajrang Dal demanded that the Muslims be banned from entering garba venues since it was a Hindu festival and they had nothing to do with it.
At first a rightwing group that identified itself as Hindu Asmita Heet Rakshak Samiti (HAHRS) had issued a diktat in Godhra that Muslim youths should not be allowed to enter garba venues in the town to counter ‘love Jihad’.
Some Hindu organisations owing allegiance to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and its allies also raised the demand for ban on the entry of Muslim youths in the garba venues in the state this year.
Imam Hasan, a resident of Rustampura in Thasra taluka, had first shot into limelight when he tried to put a skull cap on Narandra Modi’s head during the latter’s Sadbhavna fast in 2011. Modi, who had refused to wear a skull cap offered to him at the public meeting, had stated that he didn’t believe in the “politics of appeasement.”
Two police complaints had been lodged against Hasan at Nadiad (West) and Thasra police stations.
An advocate had also filed a case against the Imam at a Gujarat court after the latter made the controversial remarks. Hasan had gone underground after the right-wing activists demanded his arrest for the statements.
Incidentally, it is the first time that garba festivities have attained a communal dimension. Earlier, the festival always passed off peacefully with secular fervour and never had any religious or social tension in the context of Muslim youths.
Earlier VHP warned all concerned in this manner, ” If government remains inactive for stopping Muslims in vibrant Navratri, we’ll take necessary actions”.
VHP & Bajrangdal have woke up now from slumber which have been in hibernation during Narendra Modi’s CM tenure.
VHP had requested all Navratri (Garba) organizers to prevent Muslims entering the venues else VHP would take necessary actions, along with this
VHP has also demanded to revoke ban on time limit of 12 midnight during Navratri.
Accordingly, some Garba organizers maintained the restriction as demanded by VHP.“We won’t allow any Muslim youth to our garba to avoid `love Jihad’,” said P B Baria, organizer of Aadhya Shakti Garba Mahotsav, which draws a crowd of 35,000. “If they come with their families, they are disciplined. So, we will allow Muslim families inside the venue,” Shri Baria said.
“We don’t want any kind of disturbance and hence we have agreed that we will not collect donation from Muslims nor issue passes,” said K T Parikh, organizer of Maa Shakti Garba Group. “We, however have no means to check whether any Muslim or a Hindu is entering the garba venue.”
As an reaction the fundamental Imam Mahendi Hasan said, “Navratri is the festival of demons where drunkards & rapists participate to come & dance wearing different outfits”. This Imam raised a controversy willfully when tried to make then Guharat CM Narendra Modi stupefied by putting a skull cap on Modi during Sadhbhavna mission camp.
