Fresh Hindu-Muslim tension reported from Meerut. Tension also grips Muzaffarnagar after a Hindu student died on 11th May in Meerut Hospital after succumbing serious bullet injury on 10th May violence in Meerut. High alert extended.
Lucknow | DHNS | May 12, 2014:: Uttar Pradesh authorities remained on high alert to prevent violence in the communally-sensitive Meerut town from escalating and spreading to the nearby districts, especially Muzaffarnagar, which had witnessed large-scale riots last year.
Meerut, however, continued to be tense after Saturday’s clashes between members of the two communities at Gudri Bazaar area. Shubham Rastogi, who had sustained serious injuries in the clashes, died in the Meerut Medical College on Monday evening, according to reports.
District authorities had ordered closure of schools and colleges for three days. “We will decide about opening the educational institutions after reviewing the situation,” said a senior police official here on Monday.
Markets and business establishments in many parts of the town remained closed on Monday in protest against the failure of the police to nab the alleged culprits. The traders have threatened to keep their shops closed until the culprits were apprehended.
Cases under different sections of the IPC have been registered against 200 unidentified people and the officials said efforts were on to nab the guilty. No arrests have been made so far. The trouble had sparked off on Saturday after members of one community objected to the setting up of a water kiosk by members of another community in the area saying that it was very close to a place of worship.
A probe has been ordered by the officials into the violence. The chief development officer would submit the report within a fortnight after conducting probe.
