PTI | AGENCIES | VARANASI | 17 MAY 2014::  A day after clinching the city, Narendra Modi today visited Varanasi and offered prayers at famous Kashi Vishwanath temple.

After visiting the temple, the Prime Minister elect went to famed Dashashwamedh Ghat and took part in ‘Ganga Aarti’ for about half-an-hour amid chanting of ‘shlokas’ and blowing of coonch shells.

Modi was accompanied by BJP president Rajnath Singh, his close aide Amit Shah and party UP chief Lakshmikant Bajpai.

His coming to the holy city is seen as a gesture of gratitude towards people here who have elected him by a huge margin of over 3 lakh votes.

The Gujarat chief minister thanked people here for playing a major role in the formation of BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

A huge electronic lotus (artificial lotus) was floated in the middle of the Ganga river.

Local police along with Gujarat police, local intelligence unit sleuths and central forces were deployed in the entire area on the banks of the Ganga river at Rajendra Prasad ghat.

Passes were mostly issued to BJP leaders and workers and common people were restricted to the ghat where Modi visited.

Even people at the adjacent Meer ghat and Shitla ghat were restricted to pass through the Rajendra Prasad ghat.

Narendra Modi received a rapturous welcome in Varanasi as he visited his constituency in a show of gratitude on Saturday, a day after the BJPs resounding victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Modi participated in a grand Ganga aarti at the famed Dashashwamedh Ghat.

“I bow before the people of Varanasi for having so much faith in me,” Mr. Modi said in his thanksgiving speech from a makeshift stage at the ghat.

Modi also tweeted that: “When I see the pitiable condition of Ganga I feel pained but I feel it is Maa Ganga who has decided I have to do something for Her.”

He told emphatically that “Need of the hour is to restore the glory of the Ganga. Today Maa Ganga is calling us, her children to make the river clean once again”.

Amid tight security arrangements, Mr. Modi walked down to the Ghat, followed by BJP president Rajnath Singh and his close aide Amit Shah, after performing puja at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple here.

Many newly elected BJP MP’s of Poorvanchal region were present at the ghat to welcome Modi here .

Today India is going to have a Prime Minister who is not a speudo-secular but a practicing Hindu, who goes to the Visvanatha at Kasi and performs a Rudrabhiseka for Him and then proceeds to do a Ganga-Arati at the Dasa-Asvamedha Ghat. Today India is going to have a Prime Minister who is a practicing Hindu and who performs Hindu rituals in full public glare. This itself is a great moment of national reckoning and pride. Jaya Jaya Bharatabhumi!
