Bangladesh PM Adviser’s Delhi Airport Detention Triggers Diplomatic Row Amid Renewed India-Bangladesh Tensions.

Bangladesh PM Aide Held at Delhi Airport for Hours After His ‘Anti-India’ and ‘Anti-Hindu’ Remarks Triggered an Immigration Watchlist Alert.

Sankirtan Das | HENB | New Delhi | June 17, 2026:: A routine immigration screening at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has escalated into a diplomatic controversy between India and Bangladesh after Zahed Ur Rahman, a senior adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was detained for verification for more than two hours before being granted entry into India.

The incident has attracted significant attention because Rahman is not only a minister-ranked official in the Bangladeshi government but also one of the country’s most vocal critics of India. His past statements, public commentaries, and online broadcasts have frequently accused New Delhi of interfering in Bangladesh’s internal affairs, undermining its democracy, and treating the country as a subordinate state rather than an equal partner.

Airport Screening Sparks Diplomatic Protest

Zahed Ur Rahman, Adviser on Policy and Strategy Affairs to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister, arrived in New Delhi to lead his country’s delegation at a meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), hosted by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

According to diplomatic sources, Bangladeshi authorities had formally informed India about Rahman’s visit well in advance. Upon arrival, however, immigration officials reportedly flagged his name during routine security checks and subjected him to additional verification procedures.

Rahman later alleged that he was treated discourteously during the process and claimed that Indian authorities had prior notice of his visit. He maintained that any concerns regarding his entry should have been addressed before his arrival rather than at the airport.

After being held for approximately two-and-a-half hours, Indian authorities reportedly granted him a one-time exemption to enter the country. By that time, however, Rahman chose not to continue with his scheduled engagements and instead returned to Dhaka.

The incident prompted a strong reaction from Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry summoned India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka and expressed what it described as “deep disappointment” over the treatment of the senior official.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the episode as “unexpected” and “unfortunate,” while stating that the government was examining the matter.

Who Is Zahed Ur Rahman?

Before entering government earlier this year, Zahed Ur Rahman was one of Bangladesh’s most prominent political commentators. Through newspaper columns, television appearances, and his YouTube platform “Zahed’s Take,” he cultivated a large audience by criticizing India’s role in Bangladeshi politics.

His commentary became particularly influential following the collapse of the government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024.

Across numerous broadcasts between 2023 and 2026, Rahman repeatedly alleged that India supported an undemocratic political order in Bangladesh and prioritized strategic influence over democratic values. He frequently accused New Delhi of seeking a compliant government in Dhaka and claimed that India viewed Bangladesh as a “vassal state,” “tributary state,” or “colony.”

Among his most controversial remarks were assertions that India was the principal obstacle to Bangladesh’s democratic future and that New Delhi preferred political instability in Bangladesh to preserve regional influence.

Rahman also strongly criticized sections of the Indian media, accusing them of portraying political developments in Bangladesh through a distorted lens and exaggerating concerns about Islamist influence.

Controversial Positions on Hindu Minority Issues

Some of Rahman’s most debated comments involved discussions surrounding the treatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

Indian policymakers, civil society groups, and media outlets have repeatedly expressed concern regarding attacks on Hindu communities, temples, and religious institutions in Bangladesh during periods of political unrest. Rahman, however, often argued that Indian discussions on these issues were politically motivated and designed to create pressure on Bangladesh.

Critics in India have accused him of downplaying concerns relating to the safety of Hindu minorities and of promoting narratives hostile to India’s interests.

Reports have also pointed to his perceived sympathy toward individuals and activists accused by Indian commentators of engaging in anti-Hindu and anti-India activities, further contributing to his controversial image among Indian observers.

A Sensitive Moment in Bilateral Relations

The controversy comes at a particularly delicate stage in India-Bangladesh relations.

Bilateral ties deteriorated significantly following the political upheaval that led to Sheikh Hasina’s removal from power in August 2024 and her subsequent arrival in India. Relations between New Delhi and the interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus remained strained for an extended period.

The situation began improving after the election victory of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in early 2026. However, several contentious issues continue to complicate relations.

One of the most significant disputes concerns illegal immigration. Bangladesh has objected to India’s policy of returning individuals whom Indian authorities identify as illegal Bangladeshi migrants. The issue intensified after statements by Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the return of alleged illegal immigrants across the border.

These disagreements have periodically generated diplomatic friction despite broader efforts to stabilize relations.

India’s Security Concerns and Diplomatic Protocol

While New Delhi has not officially commented on the incident, reports suggest that Rahman’s name had been placed on an immigration watchlist because of his previous public statements concerning India.

Security experts note that countries routinely subject travelers on watchlists to additional verification procedures regardless of their political status, particularly when traveling on ordinary passports rather than diplomatic documents.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Rahman was carrying a regular Bangladeshi passport with a SAARC visa rather than a diplomatic passport. This may have contributed to the application of standard immigration procedures upon arrival.

Supporters of India’s position argue that security verification is a sovereign prerogative and that no country is obligated to waive routine screening procedures merely because a traveler holds a government position. Critics, however, contend that greater diplomatic coordination could have prevented the public embarrassment and subsequent controversy.

Broader Implications

The episode highlights the fragility of India-Bangladesh relations despite recent attempts at rapprochement. It also underscores how individual political figures and their public rhetoric can become focal points in broader geopolitical disputes.

For Bangladesh, the detention of a senior adviser has been portrayed as a diplomatic slight requiring an official response. For India, the incident raises questions about balancing diplomatic sensitivities with security and immigration protocols.

Whether the controversy remains a temporary irritant or develops into a larger diplomatic dispute will depend on how both governments choose to manage the fallout. However, the episode has once again exposed the underlying mistrust that continues to influence relations between the two South Asian neighbours, even as both sides publicly express a desire for stronger cooperation and regional stability.
