TNN | New Delhi | February 13, 2016:: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the government will take strict action against the Jawaharlal Nehru University students who raised anti-India slogans. Talking to reporters, the home minister said they won’t be spared.
“If anyone raises anti-India slogans and tries to raise question on nation’s unity and integrity, they will not be spared,” Singh said in New Delhi. “Stringent action must be taken against those who raised anti-India slogans in JNU,” he added.
Echoing Singh’s statement, Union chemicals and fertilizers minister Ananth Kumar said the government will take strict action against “anti-nationals”. “The protest at JNU is anti-national and it amounts to betrayal to the country and should be dealt with strictly. Anyone who raises slogans in favour of Afzal Guru and other terrorists, strict action will be initiated against them,” Kumar told reporters in Bengaluru.
A group of JNU students, which included a student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, raised anti-India slogans when they gathered for a meeting on Tuesday to mourn the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front co-founder Maqbool Bhat. Another meeting was held at the Press Club of India in Delhi on Wednesday where anti-India slogans were raised and placards displayed.
Following this, Kumar was booked on charges of sedition and arrested. He was produced before a Delhi court on Friday, which sent him to police custody for three days. Kumar is from CPI’s student wing AISF. Police also searched hostels looking for “anti-nationals”.
This prompted fierce protests from teachers and students against the Centre.
Another FIR was registered over the Press Club event, under which former DU teacher SAR Geelani and his alleged associates were booked for sedition, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy. Police are looking for five more people who participated in the event.
