Hindu Sena attacked CPM leader Sitaram Yechury for ‘anti-Army article’ in ‘People’s Democracy’.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury Manhandled by Hindu Sena Activists for criticizing Army Chief.

Suman  Lahiri | HENB | New Delhi | June 7, 2017:: Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist),   who was on his way to address a press conference on the ongoing farmers’ protest in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, was allegedly manhandled by two protesters belonging to a Hindu right wing outfit.

Bhartiya Hindu Sena has claimed responsibility for the attack on Yechury. Upendra Kumar (24) and Pawan Kumar Sanwal (30), the two Hindu Sena activists, have been detained by Delhi Police.

Yechury was on his way to the third floor of the AK Gopalan Bhawan, the headquarters of the CPM in New Delhi, to talk about the agitating farmers when he was accosted by the two protesters. The two were shouting “CPI(M) Murdabad”, “Indian Army Zindabad”, “Bharat Mata ki Jay” while attacking Yechury.

The attempted attack appeared to be in retaliation to an article in the CPI(M) mouthpiece People’s Democracy criticizing Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat’s remarks on the human shield incident in Kashmir. Though, Mr. Yechury rubbished speculations that he was manhandled.

Yechury, who was unharmed, called the duo “RSS miscreants”. CPI(M) workers thrashed the two men before handing them over to the police.

In the evening, DCP (New Delhi) B K Singh told The Indian Express that they have received a complaint from Hari Shankar, the office in-charge at AKG Bhawan, claiming that two unidentified people barged into their office and shouted slogans. “No FIR has been registered yet. We have detained both for questioning.”

“After sustained interrogation, the duo said they are associated with an outfit called Hindu Sena, and had been called to Gole Market by Hindu Sena chief named Vishnu Gupta”, DCP Singh said.

Sena Chief Gupta allegedly directed them to go to the CPI(M) office and raise slogans, he said.

Top Opposition leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, spoke with Yechury after the incident.
