Kolkata: ‘Peace Lover’ Locals assault Hindu cops injuring many, snatch Muslim criminal from police custody.

Tamonash Bandopadhyay | HENB | Kolkata | March 5, 2019:: A group of Hindu policemen was attacked by a violent Muslim mob with bricks and stones at Park Circus on Monday night while the cops were leaving the Haddibagan slum area after arresting a notorious Muslim criminal who lived in the slum. While some cops retaliated and some went for cover, the Jihad minded criminal fled from the custody and could not be arrested till Tuesday.

The criminal in concern, Sheikh Shahnawaz alias Chhattan Kallu has several complaints of murder, kidnapping and rioting listed against him at Tiljala, Karaya, Topsia and Beniapukur police stations. It is derived from the locales that Shahnawaz was once close with TMC leader Mumtaz Alam and Javed Khan,  now has also developed his relations with many Top TMC leaders of Kolkata including Bobby Hakim discreetly.

On Monday, the incident happened around 11.30pm, when a special team of seven officers from Topsia police station raided the Haddibagan slum in Park Circus. The cops had a specific case of assault and criminal intimidation that was recorded on Tuesday itself when they barged into a local TMC party office and dragged him out of the slum.

Police told that Shahnawaz brutally tortured one Hindu young man named Sushanta Halder being abducted by the Momin gang of Shahnawaz. Sushanta’s family members lodged an FIR as Sushanta was untraceable. Police raided the TMC office in Haddibagan as Shahnawaz was present there.

However, before the police could get him on to a police jeep, brick batting began by the Muslim friends and relatives of Shahnawaz and the cops ran for cover. Some officers tried to retaliate but soon the cops were outnumbered as Shahnawaz’s followers and other local residents gheraoed their cars and started throwing stones and bricks at the cars.

In the melee, Shahnawaz somehow managed to come out of the grasp of a policeman and fled the spot. The cops however could not leave the area until a large team of officers from Beniapukur police station came to their rescue and chased away the locals.

All seven policemen were injured in the process and were taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where one of them was admitted with serious injuries.
