Kabita Gogoi | HENB | Guwahati | July 18, 2022:: Assam Police claimed to have busted two “jihadi” modules on Thursday. The police claim that their wire is from Bangladesh and is related to a terrorist organization. It has been officially confirmed that 10 people have been arrested in this case within 48 hours. It is said that one module was allegedly operating from Barpeta in lower Assam and the other from Morigaon district in central Assam. According to the police claim, both the modules belonged to the Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) which is part of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
Several arrests in the past
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Action has been taken against the jihadi module and this has been possible with the help of central agencies. There are some jihadist elements in Assam who have links with extremist groups in Bangladesh. This happens because the state is located close to neighboring Bangladesh. However, this is not the first time that jihadists with Bangladeshi links have been arrested in Assam. Earlier too, ten people, including a Bangladeshi national, were arrested from Barpeta in the months of March and April.
Arrested from Barpeta and Guwahati
Additional DGP Hiren Nath said that on Wednesday, Bongaigaon district police arrested Abbas Ali, who belonged to ABT-Sleeper Cell, from Goalpara. Abbas allegedly sheltered a Bangladeshi jihadist in his home. After questioning Abbas, eight others, including seven from Barpeta and three from Guwahati, were arrested, he said.
“During investigation, we found that Ali had provided shelter to an absconding Bangladeshi national named Mehbub, who is a core member of the ABT. He also provided a SIM card and logistical support to Mehbub. We are checking if Ali is linked to any more people from the ABT,” said Luna Sonowal, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bongaigaon Assam.
A madrasa administrator has also been arrested
On the other hand, police have arrested Mufti Mustafa Ahmed from Moirabari in Morigaon who was allegedly in touch with ABT. The accused is the administrator of a madrasa in the district – which has been sealed after his arrest. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Mufti Ahmed was receiving money from a Bangladeshi national associated with a jihadi group since 2020. According to the ADG’s claim, he also sheltered two Bangladeshi nationals in his house till January 2022.
ADG Hiren Nath said, “We have recovered jihadi literature and some video footage from Ahmed’s house. There are strong facts against it. He was produced in court on Thursday from where he has been sent to 12-day police custody. Inquiries are ongoing for more information from others.”
The ABT (Ansarullah Bangla Team) and AQIS (Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent) have their definite roots in Islamic Bangladesh and they are jointly trying to run mayhem in the Hindu majority areas in India only to make its Islamic footprint in the country destroying its democratic and plurality character. The recovered ‘Jihadi literature’ mentions to make ‘India as an Islamic Country’ in a very short period.
The present Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma is determined to end the Jihad roots in Assam so far engaged to destroy the unity and integrity of India in a drastic measure.
