Saunak Chowdhury | HENB | Kolkata | April 21, 2023:: Four police assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) were suspended on Monday for dragging the body of a minor Hindu girl belonging to Rajbanshi community on the road during a protest by her family and villagers on April 21 after she was found dead in a pond in the Kaliaganj area of Uttar Dinajpur district in West Bengal. It was alleged by the local Hindu people that the police did that heinous act to destroy the evidence of rape and murder of the victim girl by the main Muslim culprit named Javed Akhtar.
Of the four ASIs, three are from the Kaliaganj police station while one is from the Raiganj police station, it is learned.
Last Friday, the villagers blocked a road demanding the arrest of culprits, alleging that the girl was gang-raped before being murdered. The protesters clashed with the police personnel who tried to lift the blockade. It was during the clash that some policemen, allegedly six in number, dragged the body on the road for a while before putting it in an ambulance.
A purported video of the incident also went viral on social media. Taking note of the incident, the National Commission for Women had sought a report on this connection.
On Monday, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo met one of the doctors who conducted a post-mortem on the victim’s body. He also spoke to the investigating officer (IO) of the case.
Culprit Javed Akhtar in Safe Police Haven.
Kanoongo said, “The doctor I met with said that there was an injury on the girl’s lips. West Bengal minister Shashi Panja’s statement that the girl committed suicide by consuming poison is not only irresponsible but also false.”
Panja said, “No one is trying to hide anything. Prima facie, the police found that the cause of death is poison. The police have already registered a case of murder and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and the SC/ST Acts based on the allegations. Let the police investigate the matter.”
Meanwhile, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed on Monday in the Calcutta High Court alleging rape and murder of the minor girl.
But, flashing the preliminary post-mortem examination report as the girl died due to some poisonous substance, by the WB Women, Children and Social Welfare Minister Shashi Panja and Police made a huge repercussion in the local people which caused a huge Hindu backlash in the area. Not only that people were agitated to hear the news that the chief culprit was provided Biriyani as his meal in the safe police custody not sending him to jail.
In response to police inaction on Doli Barman’s rape and murder and harassment the Hindu locals, residents of Kaliaganj, West Bengal, set fire to a police station in the Uttar Dinajpur district. Protesters set fire to the Kaliaganj Police Station in order for the accused to be arrested and harshly sentenced. Protesters hurled stones, tried to breach a police barricade, and set fire to property and vehicles. Police used tear gas to disperse them.
Arambagh TV published some parts of unbelievable video footage in which it was assumed that the infuriated mob beat the police after undressing their uniforms.
A total of 11 people have been detained for their alleged involvement in violence at Kaliaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district over the death of Doli barman, even as roads in the town wore a deserted look on Wednesday amid heavy deployment of security forces, police said.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC continued in some parts of Kaliaganj, a senior police officer said. Raids were conducted in and around Kaliaganj throughout Tuesday and 11 people were detained in connection with incidents of arson, he said.
Violating the prohibitory orders, miscreants on Tuesday set fire to Kaliaganj police station and torched several vehicles parked near it, as a mark of protest, claiming that the 17-year-old Hindu girl had been raped and murdered by her Muslim stalker Javed Akhtar and his accomplishes.
“There is heavy deployment of security forces to keep a check on law and order. At the moment, the situation is under control,” the officer told PTI over phone. The prohibitory orders were clamped in parts of Kaliaganj on April 23, ahead of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) team.
Meanwhile, state secretariat sources said Governor C V Ananda Bose on Wednesday morning spoke to Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi and Home Secretary B P Gopalika and sought a report on Tuesday’s incident.
The CM of WB, Mamata Banerjee however could not stop her from commenting nonsense. She accused BJP of the Kalaganj violence and alleged, “BJP brought people from Bihar, thrashed Women Cops and breached the peace all around”.
