Odisha: Hindutva Mob Sets Fire to Vehicle Carrying Cattle in Balasore; Muslim Driver Escapes.

Sabita Panda | HENB | Balasore | May 03, 2026:: A mob identified by police as associated with Hindutva groups set fire to a van allegedly used for cattle smuggling in Odisha’s Balasore district on Sunday, May 3. No injuries were reported in the incident, according to police officials.

The incident occurred at the Bhatatira railway station level crossing under the jurisdiction of Sabarang Police Station. According to police reports, the mob intercepted a small vehicle that was reportedly transporting several cattle under severely cramped and distressing conditions.

Local residents removed six cows from the vehicle. Subsequently, the crowd set the van ablaze. The Muslim driver, sensing potential danger, fled the scene before authorities arrived and remains untraceable, police stated.

Fire service personnel responded promptly and extinguished the flames, preventing the fire from spreading. Officers from Sabarang Police Station arrived shortly thereafter and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Santanu Jena, Officer-in-Charge of Sabarang Police Station, confirmed that a case has been registered. “When we reached the site, the vehicle was already burning. No cattle or other animals were found at the location. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver and identify those involved in the incident,” he said.

Authorities further indicated that the region has been reported as part of a broader transit route in an alleged cross-border cattle smuggling network operating in eastern India. Investigations are ongoing.
