Upendra Bharti | HENB | Panaji | May 03, 2026:: Tensions escalated in Goa’s capital as hundreds of supporters from various Hindu organisations led by Hindu Ekta Manch assembled outside the police headquarters in Panaji, demanding strict action against individuals accused of making derogatory remarks about Hindu deities. The protest, which continued into late hours, reflects growing resentment among sections of the Hindu community over what they describe as delayed and selective enforcement by authorities.
The demonstrators submitted a formal memorandum to the Goa Police, calling for the immediate arrest of three individuals—Warren Alemao, Govind Shirodkar, and Girish Chodankar. Among them, Chodankar is identified as a Congress leader, while the others are reportedly linked to political activity in the state.
Protesters also demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a fair and time-bound probe into the allegations. According to the groups, the accused had made offensive remarks targeting Hindu religious sentiments, warranting prompt legal action.
A key concern raised during the protest was the alleged inconsistency in police action. Demonstrators claimed that while swift steps were taken in previous cases involving controversial statements, similar urgency was missing in this instance.
Abhay Vartak of the Sanatan Sanstha questioned the delay, stating that if immediate action could be taken in cases like that involving Gautam Khattar, the same standard should apply to those accused of insulting Hindu deities. Protesters pointed out that a complaint against Girish Chodankar has reportedly been pending at the Mapusa Police Station for over two-and-a-half months without any arrest.
YouTuber Gautam Khattar and his brother Madhav were arrested by the Goa Police on an urgent basis and were later released on bail amid a Hindu uproar.
The situation intensified as Hindu Ekta Manch issued a three-day ultimatum to the police authorities. The group warned that failure to arrest the accused within the stipulated time would lead to a larger mobilisation of supporters across Goa, potentially escalating the agitation.
In a parallel development, the Mapusa Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against three Christian individuals—identified as Babet, Chelsea, and Mascarenhas—over alleged derogatory social media posts targeting Hindu deities.
Police sources indicated that lookout notices have been issued, as the accused are suspected to be absconding and possibly outside Goa. Efforts are underway to trace their whereabouts and bring them under legal scrutiny.
The incident has triggered broader questions about law enforcement, religious sensitivity, and political accountability in Goa. While authorities have initiated legal procedures in some cases, protesters insist that uniform and prompt action is essential to maintain communal harmony and public trust.
As the deadline set by Hindu organisations approaches, the response of the Goa Police and the state administration will be closely watched, with the potential to influence both law-and-order dynamics and the political discourse in the region.
