Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | May 06, 2026:: In a dramatic turn of events in West Bengal politics, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has secured a decisive victory over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency, describing the mandate as a “victory for Hindutva.” The result marks a significant upset in a seat long considered a stronghold of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Adhikari, often referred to as the BJP’s “CM in Waiting,” won by a margin exceeding 15,000 votes, delivering a major blow to Banerjee’s political standing. The outcome has also impacted the broader electoral landscape, with the TMC’s tally reportedly reduced to 80 seats, indicating a notable shift in voter sentiment across the state.
Framing the verdict in ideological terms, Adhikari asserted that the BJP’s victory was driven by consolidated support from Hindu voters across caste and regional lines. He claimed that while Muslim voters largely backed Banerjee, communities including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists rallied behind him, alongside sections such as Gujaratis, Marwaris and Purvanchalis. Suvendu also thanked Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporters who transferred their votes to the BJP, estimating that around 10,000 out of 14,000 votes in Bhabanipur shifted in his favour.
Dedicating his victory to what he described as “martyrs” of the BJP’s political rise in the state, Adhikari linked the Bhabanipur win to a broader ideological struggle. Adhikari said the BJP’s victory would have remained incomplete without winning Bhabanipur seat—the constituency that includes the residence of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a key ideological figure for the BJP.
Responding to comparisons with his narrower victory in Nandigram in 2021, Adhikari maintained that bloc voting by Muslim voters had similarly favored the TMC there but was insufficient to overcome what he described as consolidated Hindu support in his favor.
“This was a crucial battle,” Adhikari said after the results. “Defeating Mamata Banerjee was necessary. This marks her political retirement,” he added, noting that this is the second time he has defeated her in a direct electoral contest.
The Bhabanipur verdict carries substantial symbolic and political weight. Once a close aide within Banerjee’s inner circle, Adhikari’s evolution into her principal rival has culminated in consecutive high-stakes victories—first in Nandigram and now in Bhabanipur—potentially cementing his position as the BJP’s leading face in West Bengal.
Reacting to the outcome, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the voters of Bhabanipur, suggesting that the verdict reflects growing dissatisfaction with what he termed “anarchic governance” under the TMC.
Beyond electoral arithmetic, the result signals a deeper transformation in Bengal’s political landscape, where ideological narratives, personal rivalries, and shifting voter coalitions are reshaping the contours of power in the state.
In a symbolic move, newly elected BJP legislators are set to take their oath at Brigade Parade Ground on May 9, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti—the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore—marking what the party describes as the formation of its first government in West Bengal.
