B Upendran | HENB | Chennai | May 15, 2026:: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after state minister and TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna stated that his party was “not against Hindus, but against Hindutva,” drawing sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and intensifying the ongoing debate around Sanatan Dharma and secular politics in the state.
The remarks were made amid a continuing political storm over recent statements by Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa concerning Sanatan Dharma and caste-based discrimination.
The controversy intensified after Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, during his maiden speech in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, made remarks against Sanatan Dharma, stating that “Sanatanam that divides people must certainly be eradicated.” His comments triggered widespread criticism from BJP leaders and several Hindu organisations, who described the statement as derogatory and offensive to Hindu beliefs and traditions. The issue escalated further when TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa openly endorsed Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks, saying, “We also subscribe to the ideals of Periyar and Ambedkar. We too have entered the fray to abolish Sanatan.” The BJP accused both leaders of deliberately targeting Sanatan Hindu Dharma for political gains, alleging that such statements hurt the sentiments of millions of Hindus across the country. Following the backlash, Mustafa later attempted to clarify his stand through a post on X, asserting that his comments were not directed against any religion.
Earlier, DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin called for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma and compared it to diseases such as dengue, malaria, and AIDS.
Addressing reporters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu minister Aadhav Arjuna defended his party’s ideological position, stating that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) opposed caste inequality and social discrimination, rather than any particular religion.
“TVK is against the caste system and inequality, but we respect every religion equally. We are not against Hindus, but against Hindutva,” Arjuna said. In the row over LoP Udhayanidhi Stalin and TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa’s derogatory remarks on Sanatan Hindu Dharma, TVK minister Aadhav Arjuna attempted to do damage control, but his efforts failed to serve the purpose.
Arjuna’s statement immediately triggered a strong political backlash from the BJP, which accused the DMK and TVK of repeatedly targeting Hindu beliefs under the guise of social justice and secularism.
Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai strongly condemned the remarks and accused both the DMK and TVK of harbouring hostility toward Sanatan Dharma.
In a post on social media platform X, Annamalai referred to earlier remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and alleged that anti-Hindu rhetoric had become central to the politics of both parties.
“Days after DMK MLA Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin spoke about eradicating Sanathana Hindu Dharma on the floor of the legislative assembly, TVK MLA Thiru VMS Mustafa came in support of Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks. Not only is this very unfortunate, but it also shows the level of hatred they harbour in their minds towards an eternal Dharma that helps us lead a meaningful life,” Annamalai wrote.
He further claimed that the DMK and TVK were pursuing similar political agendas and attempting to conceal their ideological positions during elections.
“DMK and TVK, in their very short history, have proven to the people that they are two sides of the same coin. DMK has forgotten what their constant attack on Sanathana Hindu Dharma has brought them to. TVK will also soon remember,” he said.
Annamalai also criticised both parties for allegedly failing to openly communicate their ideological positions to voters during election campaigns.
“If either DMK or TVK had the courage of conviction, they should have openly declared during their election campaigns that targeting Sanathana Hindu Dharma would be central to their politics. Instead, they hid behind secularism and theatrics, only to reveal their true intentions after seeking votes from the very people whose faith they now insult with arrogance and impunity,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, the BJP leader warned that public sentiment could turn against the parties over their comments on Hindu traditions and beliefs.
“Please be reminded, Sanathana Hindu Dharma is not your punching bag. I sincerely hope their remarks will not go unpunished by our people,” Annamalai stated.
BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy also criticised Aadhav Arjuna’s comments, accusing him of insulting Hindu traditions and promoting divisive identity politics.
According to BJP leaders, repeated references to abolishing or opposing Sanatan Dharma amount to an attack on Hindu faith and cultural identity.
The latest controversy traces its origins to remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin during his maiden speech as Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where he stated:
“Sanatanam that divides people must certainly be eradicated.”
The statement reignited debates in Tamil Nadu over the interpretation of “Sanatan Dharma,” with critics alleging that the remarks were offensive to Hindus, while supporters argued that they were directed against caste hierarchy and social discrimination.
Soon after, TVK MLA V.M.S. Mustafa publicly supported Udhayanidhi Stalin’s position.
“We also subscribe to the ideals of Periyar and Ambedkar. We too have entered the fray to abolish Sanatan,” Mustafa said.
His remarks drew widespread criticism from BJP leaders and Hindu organisations.
Facing mounting backlash, V.M.S. Mustafa later issued a clarification on X, asserting that his comments were not directed against any religion.
“We are not against any religion,” Mustafa stated, attempting to ease tensions surrounding the controversy.
The controversy has once again highlighted the ideological divide in Tamil Nadu politics between Dravidian parties advocating social justice and anti-caste politics, and the BJP, which has increasingly positioned itself as a defender of Hindu identity and Sanatan Dharma in the state.
Political analysts believe the issue could further polarise public discourse ahead of future electoral contests, with debates around religion, caste, secularism, and cultural identity likely to remain central themes in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
