Sankirtan Das | HENB | Diamond Harbour | July 6, 2026:: The first official statewide observance of the Birth Anniversary of Bharat Kesari Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was celebrated across West Bengal with enthusiasm, patriotism, and a series of commemorative programmes. Government institutions, educational establishments, cultural organisations, and socio-religious bodies joined the celebrations in accordance with official government directives, reflecting the significance accorded to the legacy of the Jan Sangh founder, educationist, parliamentarian, and former Union Minister.
One of the most notable announcements accompanying the 125th anniversary celebrations came from the West Bengal Government. According to reports, the state has decided to convert Dr. Mookerjee’s ancestral residence into a memorial and public library. Additionally, a 125-foot statue of Dr. Mookerjee is proposed to be installed in Kolkata, a move widely regarded as a significant cultural and political development that has generated considerable discussion across the state’s political spectrum.
Not far from the state capital, Kolkata, Diamond Harbour emerged as one of the principal centres of celebration, hosting a series of programmes from dawn until evening that reflected both patriotic fervour and literary-cultural engagement.
Blood donation camps were organised in different parts of the subdivision, including Ward No. 4 at Madan Mohan Bhawan in the Bhagabanpur area. The programme was attended by BJP leader Prabir Purkait and Falta MLA Debangshu Panda, along with local party workers and social activists. Swami Vallabhananda of DH Bharat Sevashram Sangha, BJP leader Maniranjan Kayal and Prabir Purkait were also attended the blood donation camp.
The principal public programme of the day was organised by Shree Seva Bharati at Anandalok Bhawan, situated beside Punyalakshmi Garden. Hundreds of participants attended the seminar dedicated to the life and contributions of Dr. Mookerjee.
The event was attended by Falta MLA Debangshu Panda, Bengal Volunteers President Animintra Chakroborti, Hindu Existence Editor Upananda Brahmachari, RSS Diamond Harbour Nagar Sanghachalak Himangshu Mondal, Hindu OBC Front leader Shiddhananda Purkait, and eminent Calcutta High Court advocate Somak Basu, those who were felicitated by the organisers.
The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Upananda Brahmachari, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the traditional lamp by Debangshu Panda, Animintra Chakroborti, and Brahmachari.
Addressing the gathering, Animintra Chakroborti and Upananda Brahmachari elaborated on what they described as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s decisive role in safeguarding the interests of Bengali Hindus during the Partition period and emphasised the relevance of his political philosophy in contemporary West Bengal.
Chakroborti stressed the importance of nurturing courage, discipline, and a warrior spirit among Hindu youth, arguing that these values were essential for addressing present-day social and cultural challenges faced by Bengali Hindus.
Brahmachari urged the audience to revive what he described as the spiritual and civilisational strength of Hindu society through a deeper understanding and sincere practice of Sanatan Dharma. He also emphasised the importance of preserving cultural identity and passing traditional values to future generations.
Other speakers, including Himangshu Mondal and Shiddhananda Purkait, also addressed the audience on the social and historical significance of Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions.
The Shree Seva Bharti programme was well organised and conducted by Arindam Haldar, Sumon Singha Roy, and Amit Roy (Bittu).
The official commemorative programme was organised jointly by the Diamond Harbour Sub-Divisional Administration and the Sub-Divisional Information and Cultural Office during the afternoon session.
The event featured the Dr. Syama Prasad Memorial Lecture, accompanied by a rich cultural presentation that included patriotic songs, dance performances, recitation, and traditional puppet shows presented by artists of the West Bengal Government’s Lok Prasar Bibhag.
An extensive exhibition, designed by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, showcased rare photographs, documents, and panels highlighting Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions to education, administration, politics, national integration, and social reform. The exhibition drew large numbers of visitors and offered an informative overview of his multifaceted public life.
In his inaugural address, Diamond Harbour Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Ayan Dutta Gupta presented a historical analysis of Dr. Mookerjee’s life and work. He praised Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions across educational, administrative, political, and social spheres and urged citizens, particularly the younger generation, to understand his ideas through reading, research, and public discussion.
The SDO encouraged educational institutions and civil society to continue disseminating Dr. Mookerjee’s vision among future generations.
Delivering the memorial lecture, Upananda Brahmachari of Kaleshwari Mahakal Sevashram focused on Dr. Mookerjee’s political vision and his campaigns concerning Kashmir and the preservation of West Bengal within the Indian Union.
He referred to the influence of Bharat Sevashram Sangha founder Swami Pranavananda Ji Maharaj on Dr. Mookerjee’s public life and leadership during the critical years surrounding Partition. Brahmachari also reiterated his long-standing demand for renewed public discussion and historical examination of the circumstances surrounding Dr. Mookerjee’s death while in detention in Jammu in 1953.
Advocate Tapan Biswas delivered an address tracing the historical formation of West Bengal, arguing that Dr. Mookerjee played a pivotal role in mobilising public opinion for the creation of the state during Partition. He noted that legislators belonging to diverse political parties, including the Congress and Communist parties, ultimately supported the establishment of West Bengal in the Legislative Assembly, describing Dr. Mookerjee as one of the principal architects behind the movement.
Diamond Harbour MLA and veteran TMC leader Advocate Pannalal Halder also paid tribute to the great son of India, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
The commemorative programme concluded with a series of cultural performances that celebrated Bengal’s literary and artistic heritage.
Renowned recitation artist Chandrajit Pradhan performed poet Partha Sarathi Chattopadhyay’s composition Paschimbanga, while singers, dancers, and puppet artists from the Lok Prasar Bibhag captivated the audience with performances inspired by patriotism and Bengali culture.
The cultural segment was coordinated under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Information and Cultural Officer Brati Biswas Dutta, whose efforts were widely appreciated by participants and attendees.
From blood donation drives and patriotic ceremonies to academic lectures, exhibitions, and cultural performances, the observance of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary in Diamond Harbour reflected a broad effort to commemorate one of modern India’s prominent political and educational figures.
The combination of official government programmes and initiatives undertaken by voluntary organisations underscored the continuing public interest in Dr. Mookerjee’s life, ideas, and legacy, making the anniversary one of the most significant commemorative events observed in West Bengal this year.
