B Upendran | HENB | Sabarimala | Jan 2, 2017:: Now, for the obvious judicial and administrative tussle in Sabarimala, manufacturing of appam prasadam here came to a standstill, following restrictions imposed by the executive magistrate on the rice used for the production.

With the less buffer stock of appam remained only at 80,000 packets at devaswom godowns, the pilgrims will have to go without the prasadam from Monday.

‘Appam’ and ‘Aravana’ are the two major kind of prasadam (sacraments – blessings of Lord Ayyappa in the form of edible sweets) that devotees can collect from Sabarimala Temple. The prasadam is shared with relatives and friend going back to home after holy pilgrimage.

As the shocking order issued by the executive magistrate on Sunday on the basis of a Supreme Court order of 2015 restricting the use of rice offering by devotees kept in the “irumudi” for appam production, the devaswom authorities are forced to stop manufacturing the prasadam. This is happened due to extra judicial involvement in Hindu Temples and administrative encroachment causing an unfortunate crisis for Hindu tradition and practices in Sabarimala once again.

The order of the concerned magistrate put the Travancore Devaswom Board authorities in quandary as the purchase of rice production will be a long-winding process like inviting tenders. As the devaswom tender process will take another one week, the production will remain at a standstill. With hardly one week left for the peak Makaravilakku season, the latest order will cause problems for the devaswom authorities as well as lakhs of pilgrims. As the prasadam stock could meet the demand for another day, the sentiments of the pilgrims will be affected.

The negligence of Devaswom Board officials to take stock of the situation and illogical interference of the Govt in the Hindu Temple management and traditional faith have been causing troubles for the Sabarimala pilgrims and definitely hurting the Hindu sentiments in many ways ranging ‘temple entry’ to ‘prasadam’.

Ayyappa Seva Sangham flays order

The Akhila Bharatha Ayyappa Seva Sangham (ABASS) has flayed the order of the executive magistrate issued at the fag-end of the pilgrimage season. The suspension of prasadam production on the basis of the court order of 2015 will have far-reaching consequences on the pilgrimage and will hurt the religious sentiments of lakhs of Hindu pilgrims, ABASS national vice-president D Vijayakumar said. The Travancore Devaswom Board should act immediately against the order in the larger interests of the Sabarimala pilgrims, he said.

Vijayakumar raises his voice pointing out, why this extra judicial and administrative encroachment in Hindu Temples and rituals stopping Hindu tradition and practices one after another?

An aggrieved Vijayakumar told HENB, “Hindus respect the Judiciary and Administration highly. But, these authorities can’t put hurdles on Hindu rituals or hurt Hindu sentiments’.

Hindu devotees offer billions of rupees as ‘arpanam-danam’ (offerings/donations) to Lord Ayyappa every year, but now for the irresponsibility of the either judiciary or the administration or the politically controlled devaswom board, the devotees of Ayyappa are denied from prasadam!
