Anupam Gupta | HENB | Kolkata | Jan 10, 2017:: Former India cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly received an death threat letter from one Z Alam at his home forbidding him to attend a district felicitation function later this month. Ganguly who is now president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, reportedly got the letter by post on Saturday. He was scheduled to visit Midnapore for a function organised by the district sports federation on January 19 and contemplating to cancell all programmes without police intimation and police protection.
Bengali newspaper “Bartaman” published the letter in its edition of January 10 which revealed that one Z Alam had sent the death threat letter in Bengali to his mother Nirupama Chatterjee (Ganguly).
As per report, Ganguly said he had lodged a police complaint about this. “I have intimated the whole matter to the police as well as the organisers of the programme there,” he said on Monday.
Asked whether he will be travelling for the programme now, the southpaw said, “I have not decided yet and am waiting to hear from the authorities on this.”
Ganguly has recently taken active part in roping in sponsors for the development of not only cricket but all sports in different districts. His visit to Birbhum district in November almost became a festive occasion with a huge crowd attending his programme.
Kolkata Police has started a case on the basis of Former Indian Captain’s complaint and now investing the genuinity of the letter including an effort to divulge the identity of the alleged threatener Z Alam.
LATEST UPDATES: Today (13-01-2017) one Nirmalya Samanta was arrested in Midnapore by WB Police for sending the threat letter to Saurav Ganguly. Don’t know whether the guy is so inspired by the fashion of Jihadi threat letters as found in Islamic Bangladesh or it is his easy way to take a name of a habitual clan engaged in such type crimes.
