Upendra Bharti | HENB | Panaji | May 2, 2026:: A local court in Goa on Saturday granted bail to YouTuber Gautam Khattar, who was arrested last week for allegedly making derogatory remarks about St. Francis Xavier, widely revered as ‘Goa’s patron saint’ but infamous as the ‘Godfather of Goa Inquisition’, which led to havoc on Goan Hindus.
The controversy originated from remarks allegedly made by YouTuber Gautam Khattar on April 18 during an event commemorating Bhagwan Parshuram Janmotsav in Vasco, South Goa. Khattar, who describes himself as a “spiritual beat journalist” and is associated with the Sanatan Mahasangh, reportedly made statements concerning St. Francis Xavier, who is widely revered as Goa’s patron saint.
Following the event, activist and Congress member Peter D’Souza filed a complaint alleging that Khattar’s statements were “highly objectionable and insensitive” toward St. Francis Xavier and had offended the religious sentiments of the Christian community. The complaint further asserted that the remarks had the potential to promote enmity and disturb communal harmony.
Based on this complaint, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which address deliberate acts intended to outrage religious sentiments and the promotion of enmity between groups on religious grounds.
On the other hand, many Hindutva organisations opposed the pro-activism of Goan police forces in arresting Gautam Khattar for exposing the alleged brutality against Hindus related to the Goa Inquisition and the series of Hindu persecution allegedly carried out by Christian missionaries inspired by St. Francis Xavier.
Gautam Khattar was subsequently detained by the police in Himachal Pradesh and brought to Goa in connection with the case. His brother, Madhav Khattar, was also arrested. According to police authorities, Madhav allegedly played a role in preparing the speech delivered by Gautam and was involved in recording and disseminating it on social media platforms.
Madhav Khattar was earlier taken into custody in Uttarakhand and later released by a court. The arrests, particularly those carried out across state lines, drew attention to the procedural aspects of the case and the coordination between law enforcement agencies.
On May 2, 2026, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) granted bail to Gautam Khattar. The court directed him to furnish two surety bonds of ₹30,000 each. Additional conditions included restrictions on leaving the country and an undertaking not to repeat the alleged offence.
Advocate Amey Prabudessai, representing Khattar, confirmed the bail conditions. The legal proceedings remain ongoing as authorities continue to examine the case.
The arrests and subsequent developments prompted protests and counter-reactions across Goa and in other regions. While several Christian groups demonstrated against Khattar’s remarks—organizing marches to police stations and, in some instances, calling for a bandh—others criticized the police response.
Certain Hindutva organizations and individuals characterized the actions of the Goa Police as disproportionately swift, particularly in light of what they described as broader historical and interpretive debates related to the Goa Inquisition and the role of Christian missionaries. They argued that Khattar’s remarks were made within this context.
Additionally, some critics raised concerns regarding consistency in law enforcement, questioning whether similar promptness is applied in cases involving alleged derogatory remarks against Hindu deities or political figures on social media. These perspectives have framed the issue as one involving the equitable application of the law.
The situation has also drawn political attention, with references to the Goa government led by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. Observers suggest that the episode underscores ongoing tensions between freedom of expression, religious sensitivities, and the responsibilities of law enforcement in maintaining public order.
