Kabita Das | HENB | Kolkata | June 20, 2026:: A tragic incident circulating widely on social media has triggered strong public reactions and renewed discussions about street crime, public safety, and criminal justice. However, the details of the case remain unverified by independent sources at the time of writing.
According to claims shared across multiple social media platforms, a 25-year-old bank employee identified as Chandrima Jha was riding a scooter when three men—named in online posts as Sabir Sheikh, Hanif Sheikh, and Mubarak Sheikh—allegedly approached from behind and attempted to snatch her bag while the vehicle was moving. The incident took place in Malda’s Sujapur Town areas and occurred reportedly on June 11, 2026.
Social media accounts claim that a struggle ensued during the alleged snatching attempt, causing Chandrima and her colleague, who was riding pillion, to fall onto the road. Chandrima was reportedly run over by a vehicle approaching from behind and died from her injuries. The pillion rider was said to have survived the incident.
As of this report, these claims have not been independently verified, and no official police statement, court finding, or authoritative investigative report has been cited to confirm the details circulating online.
The incident has generated significant outrage on social media, with many users expressing grief, anger, and demands for swift justice or ‘encounter’ of the criminals connected. Some commentators have called for severe punishment for those allegedly responsible, while others have emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and due legal process.

A number of social media posts have also framed the incident through a communal or religious lens, describing the deceased as a Hindu woman and alleging that the suspects belonged to a different religious community. However, no independent evidence has been presented to substantiate broader communal claims or motives beyond the alleged criminal act itself.
Among the reactions attracting attention was a comment reportedly published by the Adidev YouTube channel. The comment compared the situation to law-enforcement practices in another state and advocated extrajudicial “encounter” killings of the accused. It also used highly inflammatory language and made broader allegations against an entire community.

Such comments reflect the intensity of emotions surrounding the reported incident but do not constitute verified facts. Legal experts and human-rights advocates generally maintain that criminal allegations should be investigated through established judicial processes, with guilt determined by courts based on evidence.
Given the rapid spread of information on social media, experts frequently caution against drawing conclusions before official investigations are completed. In high-profile and emotionally charged cases, misinformation, inaccurate details, and unverified allegations can circulate widely before facts are established.
Until law-enforcement authorities release verified findings, key aspects of the incident—including the precise sequence of events, the identities and roles of those involved, and any possible motives—remain subject to official investigation.
The reported death of a young bank employee has understandably generated public sorrow and anger. However, while social media has amplified claims and reactions related to the incident, independent verification and official findings remain essential before definitive conclusions can be drawn. The case underscores both the human tragedy of violent crime and the importance of relying on verified information during ongoing investigations.
A bank employee met a tragic end while trying to escape from snatchers. Chandrima Jha (25) died while speeding away on her scooter, while her colleague Jhumpa Haldar (26) was injured. The incident occurred on Thursday (June 11) on National Highway 12, near Gour Malda Station under the English Bazar Police Station in Malda. Late Friday night, police from English Bazar arrested three snatchers from a hideout in the Sujapur area.
Chandrima hailed from Sattari under the Mothabari Police Station but lived in a rented house in Phulbari, English Bazar town, for work. Jhumpa, who works at the same bank and lives in the same neighborhood as Chandrima, is currently undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital with serious injuries.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that Chandrima and Jhumpa had secured jobs at a private bank in Sujapur about a year and a half ago. They commuted to work daily by scooter, returning to English Bazar in the afternoon. At the time of the incident, Jhumpa was driving the scooter, and Chandrima was riding pillion. Three individuals began tailing them from the Sujapur stand and started harassing them as soon as they crossed the Madhughat Bridge.
It is alleged that the three men chased them on a motorcycle. No other motorists on the road came forward to help. The two young women continued to speed away on their scooter for nearly 30 minutes while being pursued; the miscreants even threw belts at them and brandished sharp weapons.
The miscreants eventually pulled up right in front of them and tried to snatch a bag belonging to one of the bank employees. This caused both women to be thrown onto the road. Chandrima reportedly died on the spot after sustaining a head injury, while Jhumpa remains under medical care.
Police have arrested Sabir Sheikh, Hanif Sheikh, and Mobarak Sheikh in connection with the incident; they are aged between 19 and 20. When produced before the Malda court on Saturday, the judge remanded them to five days of police custody. The deceased’s family has demanded the strictest possible punishment for the culprits. Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh stated that three individuals have been arrested based on specific complaints.
